Chongjin Landing and Entry into Northern Korea

Chongjin was a key Hamgyongbuk-do port and a transport node into the northern interior. As Soviet forces pressed from Unggi and Rajin toward Chongjin in mid-August 1945, the Japanese defensive structure in northern Korea rapidly came apart.

The operation formed the coastal axis of Soviet entry into northern Korea and led into the subsequent movement toward Pyongyang and the formation of the Soviet occupation zone north of the 38th parallel. The political order of northern Korea cannot be separated from this military entry route.
