Destruction of the central field armies
The Huaihai Campaign consumed major Nationalist field forces around Xuzhou and the Huai River through successive encirclements. The sequence from Nianzhuang to Shuangduiji and Chen Guanzhuang changed not one local front but the balance of forces across Central China.
The result gave Communist forces the base for advances north of the Yangtze and forced the National Government to prepare the defense of Nanjing and Shanghai. It is a key link to the later Yangtze crossing, southern retreat, and relocation to Taiwan.
